Mugen was so serene and zen -- you definitely feel like you are away from the city. I stayed during a typhoon and everyone there was so accommodating and helpful. This was the most comfortable bed during my time in Japan. The breakfast was very delicious but I honestly could have used a larger portion -- I blame this on being from America, where we’re accustomed to starting our day with a large meal. The coffee was the best I had in Japan too -- I don’t know if they use a Nespresso or what, but it was great. 🙂
Everyone is amazing here. They are so friendly and helpful that I feel like staying with my own family. The room is so clean that I get picky at all other hotels now. The design and decor is so nice, traditional yet trendy. The futons and pillows feel so comfy. The breakfast is really yummy and healthy, and it only costs 700 Japanese Yen per person.
Everything. The property is lovely, the staff amazing, and the location is great for those that love staying in a real neighborhood with plenty of small, authentic shops.
This beautiful little place was a joy to visit. Tome & her husband clearly know exactly what they’re doing-a stylish, high-quality Ryokan in a charming neighbourhood. This lovely couple could not have been more helpful or accommodating in making cool & unique suggestions of places to see & things to do-they also helped us so much in booking multiple restaurants & lending us bikes. The room was gorgeous, with beautiful touches, spotlessly clean with vey comfy beds. Less we forget the delicate Japanese breakfast & lovely little coffees & snacks! We both loved it here-thank you 🙏
Mugen is an outstanding place to stay. It is an authentic ryokan in a very good location for visiting the numerous sights of Kyoto. The staff were wonderful throughout, always friendly and helpful and often going above and beyond expected levels of service and hospitality. The building and rooms are delightfully decorated and everything is in pristine condition. The breakfast was delicious and the bar has a fantastic selection of Japanese whiskeys.
This is a great little ryokan tucked away on a little alley. It has a nice peaceful, atmosphere that transports you back in time. I liked that I had tatami mats and a futon but had a modern bathroom and shower. Plus air conditioning because Kyoto can be hot and humid. It is conveniently located between the Marutamachi and Imadegawa stations on the Karasumi subway line. The Randen trolley is not too far either but a little more of a hike. Bus stops are much closer than the train stations and the staff will tell you which bus to take if you tell them where you want to go.
From the convenient location to the authentic Japanese atmosphere to comfortable futon and clean room to the friendly, attentive, and helpful staff to the delicious Japanese style breakfast and coffee, you cannot go wrong to stay at Mugen. I stayed here while attending a work related conference because staying at a hotel gets boring. It is about a 15 minute brisk walk to the Karasuma line Marutamachi subway station and about a 20 minute walk to the Imadegawa subway station, which is also on the Karasuma line. The bus stop for several routes, convenient for going to Kyoto station or to see temples and other historic places, is located much closer, maybe 5 minutes away. The building is quite old, apparently Mugen is located in what used to be an old kimono shop. It has been extensively and tastefully renovated to retain its charm but to have modern amenities. Why not have an experience you can’t have elsewhere?
Simply put- it was an amazing stay. Great staff, patient and helpful; equally great breakfast 🙂 Hope to stay there again!
