We stayed here to visit the Tatacoa desert - well worth the trip - it does take a bit of an effort to get here - we stayed here 2 nights and could have stayed another day to enjoy the pool - one day in the desert was enough for us .

I had 3 nights/2 days here and you woukdn't any more. I had to work one day and did a 12-hour trip the other. The village is interesting in seeing small town life but there's not much reason to hang around and things close early in the evening.
The trip 9am-9pm had around 15 participants in two vehicles with one guide. There was a short trip on the river, a brief walk to see insects, catci etc, hours in the grey visit (with a slightly challenging walk), lunch, time as the swimming pool in the desert, the red desert for sunet and the observatory (worth it) - it was COP150k
The hotel told me how much it would cost in tuktuks etc but having come back from the observatory, it was quite a long way. To do it on your own, I think it would be better to say in the desert otherwise from Villavieja, this trip is a good way of fitting it all in. There was another trip options of half day, 2hrs in each desert with a spanish speaking guide but that was also COP150k and you wouldn't experience enough but it's an option for those with less time

1 full day is enough.
1 full day is enough.
Try to avoid the scam tours with no real guides or these scam local star observatories.
I would recommend to just book a driver and walk by yourself through the desert! There is no chance if getting lost!!
Villavieja views, quiet, attractions, people, food and weather is great. You can walk, ride bikes, explore the desert, try different food, see the stars all in one short trip. My favorite activity was walking by the desert, the red and the gray sides (Cuzco and Los Hoyos). The food was also amazing. The most exciting activity was the tour riding 4-wheels bikes. The stargazing was also breath taking.

Villavieja is hard to get to if you do not have your own transportation. A taxi ride from Neiva between 7:00pm and 6:00am can cost 100.000 pesos (there are no buses or taxis or colectivos between these times except from the airport or bus station). The town is quiet and charming, right on the edge of Tatacoa and a short drive or long hike to the entrance. The town shuts down by 10:00pm every night. Nice little tiendas, restaurants aren't great, so don't expect a diversity of food or bars.

The landscapes and natural scenery in the Tatacoa desert are superb, and totally worth a visit. The only inconvenience around there was of course the heat, so be prepared and plan your sightseeing tours as early as possible to enjoy the views (we found it quite hard to keep wandering around after 10 am, but fortunately we started before sunrise)
